Hi

* locality - P?voa D?o - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL
* date - 2008.08.21
* size - about 7 mm (medium fly)
* habitat - woodland
* substrate - on Mentha sp. flower

I thought that this was a Leopoldius, but then I asked to David Clements and Jens-Hermman and the conclusion is the same: Conops scutellatus.

I misleaded the proboscis, in which is small in Leopoldius not as long as in Conops genus.
Nevertheless, it is one of the most beautiful conopids around but hardly ones beat the spectacular Myopa picta. Smile (I also love Myopa dorsalis!)

Actually, I have now re-checked this specimen against my slides, and it is a male Conops silaceus. According to the checklist of Carles-Tolra & Baez, silaceus is known from Spain but not previously recorded from Portugal. There is a good photo of scutellata on the forum by Picotverd, 15/8/08 22.39 for comparison. C silaceus is more robust and yellower than scutellata, and the black frontal marking is horizontal (vertical in scutellata).

Great news, David. Thank you.
And for Jens-Hermann too. Smile

edit: the note on this new species will be released soon in SEA (2010)
