One for John Carr, perhaps? Quite a big one, had thought it was a female Bibionid at a glance because of size, shape and colouring. A similarly structured fly was recently identified as a Mycetophilid in a thread, so although I had thought they were smaller and less colourful... Anyway - Location: CHongwe, Lusaka, Zambia. Habitat: scrubby grassland adjacent to gardens/orchards. If I recall correctly, on a stand of invasive Mexican daisy. Date: 28 February 2013. Size: Reasonable sized, probably around 10mm long. I'll appreciate any and all progress on ID because frankly, I haven't a clue. EDIT - title updated from 'Nematoceran - Mycetophilidae?', to 'Sciaridae?' based on post by John Carr. Sure, with eye bridge present and such a m-fork this is a specimen of Sciaridae. In the tropics there are some species with orange thorax... so long, xylo |
