Do you have a view on the V sternite.....and setae on midtibia / hindtibia, arista and acrostichals. I am thinking about Eutrichota (anderssoni (Hennig) maybe), but the prealar seta seems to short... Johanna (from tomorrow I have for a week no internet, so if you place other photos after today, maybe Ackland can give an answer, otherwise you have to wait a week for an answer from me...  )

I think Joanna is probably correct. Eutrichota anderssoni and pilimana are very similar and the best difference is in the postgonites! Here is part of my key to males. As you have a specimen you can check on the tergite 6 character. 5 Distance between eye margins on frons at narrowest part equal to diameter of anterior ocellus, orbits touching at this point. Dusting on scutum (viewed from above) slightly more bluish, and lateral dark vittae more distinct. Wing more yellowish tinged at base. tergite VI bare. Surstylus longer and more slender. Postgonite narrower. Distiphallus less heeled ventrally at base.. pilimana (Ringdahl) – Distance between eye margins on frons at narrowest point twice diameter of anterior ocellus, orbits separated by an extremely narrow black midstripe. Dusting on scutum more greyish, lateral vittae less distinct. Wing more brownish tinged at base. Tergite VI with a few setulae. Surstylus shorter and not so slender. Postgonite wider. Distiphallus strongly heeled at base ventrally anderssoni (Hennig) |

It looks like a single seta on tergite VI. But it is difficult from a photo, though yours are some of the best. I hope some figures appear of the inner genitalia. Here are the best differences. You will have to dissect the genitalia. I am pretty sure it is anderssoni. |

At first a compliment for your excellent photos and effort ! The differents between the inner genitalia of E.anderssoni and E. pilimana are also very simular so I don’t think we can see the small differents on your last photos. Mayby the only possible way to see if it indeed is E. Anderssoni, is to check again tergite VI , because I think I can see three little hairs on it (two mayby a little broken). Maybe it is possible to collect another specimen at the same place you found this one and send it to me or Ackland. A very nice find by the way ! Johanna |

"A very nice find by the way !" You can say that again!. I only have 2 males, one from the banks of the river Spey in Scotland, and the other a male I caught on the top of Mt. Nuolja in Lapland at 1000m . There was snow lying around. My figs of the inner genitalia of anderssoni and pilimana did not appear. They were only about 20Kb each and JPEG's, so I don't know why. Any suggestions? The genital capsule needs to be macerated in KOH, by the way. It can then be dissected out and made transluscent, so one can see all the small details. Keep trying, skrylten. Where in Sweden is Degeberga, by the way? |
