Hi, on Tenerife I collected this specimen. Maybe a male Culicidae? thanks in advance!

Bruchomyiinae look very much like Phlebotominae and do also occur in the Canaries. The wing venation is very similar to illustrations of the only Palearctic species, Nemopalpus flavus Macquart. To confirm I would need a close-up shot of the abdomen (in lateral view)?

If it really is a Nemopalpus flavus, I would like to know the circumstances you collected it in - I will go to the Canaries next year, and I have promised some of my colleagues to get fresh material of this species for molecular analyses... |

I just showed the pictures to RĂ¼diger Wagner - he agrees that it really is Nemopalpus. Well done - this species is unique in the Palearctic fauna and is very rarely collected! |

Hi, many thanks. I saw 3 specimens around the house where we stayed, hanging on rocks or from the ceiling of an open garage. One specimen was sitting in a spider web. It was found between 9-10 pm. Location: La Luz, Orotava. I attach one more photo:
