I am completely puzzled by this fly. I found it near Kelebia, about 35 km W of Szeged, S. Hungary, on Alcanna tinctoria growing on an ancient sand dune, on the date 07.05.2011. Its size is around 3mm. Can someone suggest a family? (I have only these two pictures.) Thanks in advance! Henrik piros attached the following image: ![]() [198.93Kb] |

One of the lesser subfamilies of Bombyliidae, maybe near Apolysis. |

Thank you very much, John! So it is Bombylidae. It seems to me that Apolysis doesn't have discal cell. Wing venation of this fly matches that of Phthiria perfectly, but somehow that genus doesn't seem right, because this fly looks smaller, have an apparently sorter proboscis, almost uniform silvery appearance and does not have a lightly colored stripe at the inner eye margin. So I am still confused....![]() Greetings, Henrik Edited by piros on 29-03-2013 16:13 |

I compared these pictures to several found on the Net, and I think now that it could be a female Phthiria (pulicaria?) after all! |
