Middle-sized Tachinidae found in Szeged, S. Hungary, on 19.10.12. Is it possible to say something about its ID? Thanks in advance! Henrik piros attached the following image: ![]() [197.4Kb] |

Looks like a Spallanzania sp. but there are similar alternatives

Gonia is the obvious one but yours doesn't look like a Gonia sp. ... I can't remember the others off the top of my head. With a specimen it would be a lot easier to be sure of an ID though.

Pseudogonia is another alternative, but I agree with Chris on Spallanzania. Should be confirmed by arista not having long 2nd segment and by the dark tegula contrasting with the pale basicosta. regards, Steve |

Many thanks to both of you! I don't have a good picture of the antenna, but tegula and basicosta look like those in Spallanzania pictures available on the NET (attached enlargement), so I am convinced that this fly is Spallanzania sp. In Hungary, three sp. of Spallanzania are known to occur: S. multisetosa, S. hebes and S. quadrimaculata, the last two being more frequent. Based on these pictures, is it possible to exclude one or two of these? Thanks again, Henrik piros attached the following image: ![]() [189.87Kb] Edited by piros on 21-03-2013 15:42 |
