Thank you Sara. In 2012, Nartschuk reported from Turkey (Antalya) Lipara lugens Mg., a single known species in Turkey. In Israel, there are also L. rufitarsis, and L. similis. Have you an idea about the specific identity of our specimen? |

Are you sure you meant Lipra lugens? Because if you mean L. lucens, I can exlude that sp. I don't know many flies, but this one I know quite well, and it looks different (It is large, dark brown with stripes of short, golden colored hairs). Henrik Edited by piros on 19-02-2013 19:00 |

Upon second thought, it could be L. lucens after all. The silverish color of hair stripes could be due to the way it was photographed

This is Lipara lucens Meigen, 1830 (Chloropidae, Oscinellinae), The adjective lucens means "shining" and describes the silvery or golden hairs which densely cover the robust fly, different from two other blackish Lipara species, pullitarsis and rufitarsis. The larvae of the valid 5 European Lipara spp. produce galls in reed (Phragmites australis). These cigar-like galls are the focus of a great many of scientific publications and dissertations. |
