Is there anything odd about the figures of Suillia vaginata and pallida in Withers (1987) or Gorodkov (1988), please? Withers' fig. 16 (right surstylus of pallida) matches Gorodkov's fig. 678.4, vaginata; while Withers' fig. 3 (right surstylus of vaginata) is not a good match for either Gorodkov's 678.3 (pallida) or 678.4. However, Gorodkov's key says “forwardly directed protuberance in basal part of [right] edite not broader than apex of edite (fig 678.3) ....... pallida”. Whereas to my eye, the protuberance is broader than the apex in both of Gorodkov's figures 678.3 and 678.4. Here are the surstyli of the specimen that is causing me the trouble, caught 6 Oct 2008 in my garden, Menai Bridge, Wales. Any suggestions, please? Could you separate one of the surstyli and make a pic with a lateral view? Andrzej

Hello. Here is the right surstylus / edite. It is a good fit to Gorodkov's pallida, but in Withers' key it more closely matches vaginata than pallida. Thanks in anticipation, John John Bratton attached the following image: ![]() [49.1Kb] |

S. pallida ! in S. vaginata the tip of surstylus is longer and narrowed . Andrzej

Thanks very much. I'll submit the photo to the gallery. Can anyone contribute a similar view of S. vaginata, please? John Bratton |
