I am perplexed by this fly There are no meral bristles and the 6th vein does not reach the wing margin, nor are there any hairs under the scutellum, so I am assuming it must be a Muscidae. Although it is not very well shown, the discal vein is bent forward in a smooth curve. The thoracic bristles are strange – there are 7 post-sutural bristles in the dc line that can be distinguished with care as stronger than the other hairs in that area but only the last two near the scutellum are very long especially the last one. There is one poorly developed pre-sutural dc. The mouth-edge above is produced almost as far out as the width of the antennae 3. The proboscis predatory and the dark abdominal spots and centre-line also recall Coenosini but the sternopleural bristles are 1:1 , there is no downward pointing seta above the front coxa and the tibiae are remarkably free of bristles; just a p bristle on mid and a pd on the hind, both barely longer than the tibia is wide – none at all on the front tibia. The prominent yellow palpi are flattened and with strong seti. V1 above has seti at the base and so does V3 beyond the node. The sub-costal vein is not sinuous. I will be fascinated to find the identity of this one. Caught 10/10/12 in a sandy area nr. Lincoln UK.

Thank you Nikita; I did consider this species but my key says it should have a setose subcostal vein. I thought that the mediastinal vein of the key was another name for the sub-costal vein, whereas I now see that it refers to what I thought was the V1 (radial vein). Anyway thanks again
Regards

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
