In the Oosterschelde, an inland saltwater lake in the SW-part of The Netherlands some peculiar Ephydrid-like pupa were found together with this not yet fully developed adult. I was wondering if anybody could tell me the species-name?
The pupa and this adult were found on 21 august 2013.
I'm not sure if the adult and the pupa (some with pharate adults) belong together, but if I know the species name of the adult I can look for pupal descriptions.

edit: I just found out that the pupa belong to Canidae (with long threadlike anterior-spiracles)

Looks very like Xanthocanace ranula - usually classified with flies rather than dogs! Wink

Thanks Tony
You have guessed (?) correctly that this is a fly and not a dog. The differences are subtle though (dogs usually do not have wings).
Of course I made a typo and I meant to say that the pupa were Canacidae. So this is very exciting that we have the pupa and associated adults. I will photograph the pupa and add it to the immature forum, shortly.
