It is risky labelling a Spilogona from pictures, but I'm pretty sure it is Spilogona scutulata. With the specimen in hands I could confirm (or not).

Thank you Stephane! if it is an Spilogona scutulata it would be a new species for the Netherlands, I will send it to Joke van Erkelens for identification.

This is another great find and a new one for me, would it be possible for you to put on a photo showing the abdominal patterning on the tergites?

With Best Wishes

Hello Johanna

My queries were due to the key in Fonseca 1968

This states that for the female the abdominal spots are somewhat faint sometimes absent and tibia 2 has 0 bristles beneath (rest is ok)

Does your key give any information on this, abdominal spots don't look faint and tibia 2 does look like it has ventral setae?

It's a rare species in the UK so there may be variation?

With Best Wishes

The first pictures (living fly) don't show the black blob : it is due to handling I think. And I can't see any ventral seta on t2, just a little pd (I have not the fly though).

Dick send me two specimen, who I checked with Gregor/Roxkosny and Hennig.
With both keys, the specimen turned out to be S. scutulata
In both keys there is no full description of the female legs chaetotaxy.
In male specimen the t2 could have 1-2 pd setae (no ventral setae)
The female specimen from Dick, both have 2 pd setae, close to each other.
Also there where no black spots on the abdomen, so it seems to be a wet spot on the pictures.
(I know Dick saves most specimen in the fridge and takes his photos of the flies after a while, so could be some condensation)
There are some very vague brown fadings on the abdomen, but no clear spots.

Johanna
