Last week I was in Algarve, Portugal and photographed this Bombyliidae. For determination I put a question on the Dutch Board waarneming.nl http://forum.waar...msg1369453. They suggested me to pose my question on the Diptera-board, because here is more experience available. I hope somebody can help me with the determination. Possibly Conopherus spec. As I am new on this board, I am not exactly aware how determination-questions are put here. Besides I am mainly a photographer and not a entomologist. I would like to add 2 photographs, but I manage just to attach one. (more pics, and the observation-details can be found in the link above). I hope the genus of this species can be detemined of this and perhaps even more. Thanks in advance, John Bouwmans John Bouwmans attached the following image: [133.72Kb] Edited by John Bouwmans on 17-04-2013 13:39 |

Hi! Wing venation (in your other pictures) doesn't support Conophorus. Looks more like Bombylius - or something related - to me (though I am not an expert!) Greetings, Henrik |

Hi, John!! I am not an expert either but I can tell you that your specimen is a female Bombylius for sure I have photographed an extremely similar specimen last weekend and I am struggling to confirm Bombylius mus. Hope somebody can help you with this hint, here or somewhere else. I would be very happy to know if this happens Best Piluca |

Thanks for the reactions so far. So the Genus-question ia already answered (Bombylius). Will add the picture Henrik referred to attach to this post. The wing venation is here clearly visible. Perhaps this helps further determination.
