From midwest Sweden 2005-OCT-11. I think this is Bibionidae. Not sure what to expect from this one. Just a single view of this individual ...

It's a male Bibio and, given the date, there are only two options:

B. clavipes and B. lepidus.

If correct (I cannot see the hind femur in the pic to confirm),
this clearly is Bibio lepidus

Thank you Theo. I think I have photos of other Bibionidae individuals from the same trip. I'll see if I have better views of the hind femur on those ...

Hi crex

This would be the other one, Bibio clavipes.

The stigma is less dark and it stops at vein R1,
whereas in lepidus it is deep black and continues.

Thank you Theo. It takes an expert to see the difference. The wings look the same to me.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
