From July 2009 what I think is a Tephritis sp.
Photos taken in Reading UK, on 2009-07-21 and 2009-07-26. No obvious host plants - it was on the window of a 2nd floor flat that is surrounded by horse chestnut trees and lawns.
Initially I thought it might be T. matricariae (which seems to have colonized SE England in the past decade) but now I think the wing patterns don't look quite right for that. So then I thought maybe T. praecox but that seems to be quite rare in England. Now I am just confused.

Indeed. Not too much unexpected: this species has been listed for the UK (White 1988).

Thankyou Saeed and Valery!

(What I meant by T. praecox being 'rare' was it appears in only 6 10-km squares on Laurence Clemon's 2008 Updated Distribution Maps of the Tephritidae (Diptera) of Britain and Ireland, whereas T. matricariae appears in 44.)

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
