 Tachinidae, Therobia leonidei from Romania

Hi forum, just back from the lamp (4.august.2008). found there a very strange fly (at leas in my eyes), not very sure where to put this one (Tachinidae, Rhagionidae...). After some googling and diptering  i think i have the ID.Therobia leonidei, including the white inflated hearing organ can be seen. Sorry not dorsal shots, but the fly was collected. Is this really Therobia leonidei? After Fauna EU this is not present in Romania, Theo maybe you have some more data on this distribution? Therobia leonidei, in the tribe Ormiini. They are parasitoids of grasshoppers. They are easy to find with Hg lamps in a local with dozen of that noisy grasshoppers.  |

Excellent, both the pics and the ID. Very nice you can really see the 'Ormiini-ballon' between the front legs ! You can find the distribution on faunaeur.org, but that is probably not what you mean. Therobia is rare in collections, but then again, it has a nocturnal lifestyle and how often are you collecting at night ? It has been reared in some numbers by the Leonide-couple from France. Theo |

Theo, in last year I found, at least, 5 individuals in one night. THis year I will try to find some after 15th August. If I catch any, I will send for you and Chris the specimens.  |

Theo Hi Theo, often enough i stay on light. today started light again (is in my balcony, so easy to go to check ). i think one time i have seen this is a stepe habitat with patches of salted land.now i know better what to see, so if is coming again... i will come back on this with a PM to you. thanks to all for confirming the ID, cosmln |
