This small fly was near Chicago attracted to some deposition on a fence. ~ 3/16".

It is the same or very close to the one on Bugguide.net (http://bugguide.n...view/16461). The suggested name there is Thaumatomyia. Searching a little further I stumbled on the Cedar Creek site and the give a resembling picture of Thaumatomyia glabra at http://cedarcreek...037ap.html.
