Good evening everyone. I asked for what this fly could be in a french-speaking forum (http://www.insecte.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=78121), but noone could answer me ("never saw that...") . I thought it could belong Empididae family, but I'm not sure at all. It may not be linked, but I saw at the same moment and the same place an Empis, maybe Empis ciliata, eating a Tipula.

The picture was taken in Fouchères, 10260, Aube, France. Natural grass. My unknown fly was around 2cm long, as long as Empis. Unfortunately, here is the sole picture I took, I have no different view to help you.

Empis ciliata is not such a bad suggestion considering the fact that there are not too many empids of larger size (2 cm is certainly an exaggeration) with pennate legs.

Thank you very much, Paul, for your answer (and nice to meet you Smile ). 2cm can indeed be an exageration, I didn't mesured it and when I took this picture, I didn't know such forum existed, thus I hadn't paid attention of sizes of insects I saw. But I remember I was impressed by the big size of that dark fly, with noisy flight, and carrying a Tipula. On my first post (http://www.insecte.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=77747), you can see that my Empis is not much smaller than Tipula (pennate legs are less visible on that one, but it isn't the same specimen, it can be different species).

The male depicted there certainly is Empis ciliata.
