Hello flyforum, Today (24-8-2006) I found a Tachinidae-looking fly in some reet. place: De Nieuwe Meer (lake Amsterdam) The fly was very dark with two sharp white lines on it's abdomen. 3rd antennes are light and on the legs are big strong black 'spiny' hairs. Scutem and abdomen got are a bit glossy and the forehead is also black. Legs are black Size of the fly: 10 mm or less.. When I looked at the pictures at home, I was surprised that I took also the male of this fly. They must have played hide and seek but I did not mention it. What kind of Tachinidae is this? Exorista? or perhabs Th. nigripes? Perhabs it is something different.. robert heemskerk This is the male which surprised me

I think the male is Rhinophoridae - Melanomya nana. The female also looks a rhinophorid, but a different species - possibly Phyto melanocephala.

Hi Robert (and Tony), Tony is right on the first one: a male Melanomyia nana The female is a Tachinid: Gastrolepta anthracina. Nice picture, since this species is not so large. Do take care not to mix up photos from different individuals, as they often prove to be of different species. Theo Zeegers |

I did not expect that fly one could be identified..  thank you very much! And this was not hide and seek between male and female, but between species..! Strange.., I can not find 'Gastrolepta anthracina' on the dutch Tachina spec. list.. Hi Robert The name is correct, nederlandsesoorten.nl is wrong ! There are still a number of typo's in nederlandsesoorten.nl. Gastrolepta is definitely mentioned in the official checklist by Beuk. In nederlandsesoorten.nl it is mentioned as Compsilura anthracina which is completely wrong and undoubtedly one of these typo's Theo |

It's there under Compsilura anthracina. Another synonym is Medoria anthracina. Fortunately it has kept the same species name!
